Mercedes Infared Remote Keys:

Mercedes Remotes have 2 main functions.  Enable remote locking and unlocking of the vehicle, and storing the needed data to authorize the Immobilizer system to start the car.

They use a Radio Frequency signal for the keyless entry.  It also has an infared transmitter and receiver built in as well.  This has a back up feature for keyless entry in the event that the RF signal is not working.  On most models they are equipped with an Infared Receiver built into the door handle assembly.  This allows the key to submit a request to lock or unlock the doors.  This range is only within a 5 foot line of site area.

Starting in model years 2003,  Mercedes introduced its Keyless Go feature.  This allowed the user to unlock and start the car without physically using the remote key.   These cars were built with antennas in and around the car to pickup key range and signal.

With Mercedes being one of the hardest keys to program, the Diagspeed has advanced and developed a solution to program and make keys for Mercedes up to 2015.  This has made the Diagspeed one of the best Mercedes Key tools in the world.

In the locksmith industry the Remote keys are identified by the type type of ROM chip installed within the key.   These have a 2 digit number (ROM ID ) attached to them to distinguish whether the key type is a NEC chip key ( Early key types )  or a newer BGA key ( Ball Grit Aray).

Within the key ROM versions the keys are also broke down by options, as the Keyless Go keys internal hardware is different in many ways compared to the normal Infared version.

The Keyless Go keys are Equipped with larger Radio Frequency receivers and transmitters.   This is also visible when the key is removed from its plastic shell.

The Diagspeed allows the user to renew old NEC chip style keys and reprogram them to use on another car.   Also it has a built in feature to program aftermarket keys to use, also known as BE keys.

After each key is programmed, you can then test it with the Diagspeed  to verify the programmed data to the EIS.  You can  also check  that the RF Remote side is operating correctly.

As Mercedes technology progresses, you can be rest assured that the Diagspeed will continue to develop solutions to program these very complex systems.
